At Trinity Lutheran School our students are to be dressed in a way that reflects they are children of God. Parent cooperation in these guidelines will help strengthen the partnership between parents and teachers to train our children in values and habits that reflect our relationship with Christ. Clothing should be clean and in good condition. A student’s dress and appearance should not be attention-seeking or distracting. School administration will always have the final say in what is allowed. Assisting the acting Principal in these determinations - for the girls, Mrs. Buzzell, - for the boys, Mr. Grulke. All guidelines will apply at all church and school events including the Christmas Program, Confirmation, and Graduation.

Dress Guidelines

• Shorts and capris may be worn to school anytime. Dress appropriately for the weather. Allow for temperature changes during the day and outdoor play at recess. Students will be expected to participate with their classes during recess time. Students should have additional clothing available for cold weather.
• Tennis shoes should be worn for PE classes and outdoor play. Tennis shoes are best for recess time indoors and out. Crocs and sandals can be hazardous and are not recommended for indoor or outdoor recess.
• Be sure to have a second pair of shoes available at school during inclement weather to wear outside.
• Clothing should not be distracting or attention-seeking-in message or pictures. So we maintain an environment that is apolitical, messaging that presents political parties or candidates is not permitted. Clothing with words across the rear end is not allowed.
• Revealing styles that expose a student’s midriff as well as any visible undergarments, are not allowed. Students should not wear light or white-colored pants, shorts, skirts, or shirts which allow the colors or patterns of undergarments to show through.
• Shirts should be modest and appropriate. A second shirt must be worn over any spaghetti strapped tank top or a t-shirt must be worn under the spaghetti strapped tank top.  Shirts must cover both shoulders at all times.
• Strapless shirts or dresses are not allowed.
• Skirts and dresses cannot be shorter than the length of the hand when the arm is in the relaxed vertical position.
• Tights, leggings, jeggings, yoga pants, skinny jeans, or other form-fitting pants may be worn under skirts, dresses, and longer shirts. (Exception: students 4th grade and under are permitted to wear leggings, jeggings, yoga pants, skinny jeans, or other form-fitting pants without additional layers.) Skirts, dresses, and longer shirts cannot be shorter than the length of the hand when the arm is in the relaxed vertical position.
• Pajama pants and hospital pants, are not appropriate for school and cannot be worn.
• Any pants or shorts with leg holes in them that are above the knees must have fabric underneath the holes. Bare skin should not be exposed. Clothing which is “distressed” must also follow this guideline.
• Students are expected to remove hats and hoods when entering the school building and keep these off as long as they are in the building.
• Hair must be clean and well-groomed at all times.
• Any clothing, makeup, hairstyle, accessory, etc. that is deemed by the school administration to interfere with the educational process is not allowed.

Note: School administration reserves the right to determine the appropriateness of a student’s dress or appearance. This includes piercings (beyond ears) and tattoos. The final decision will be determined by the acting Principal, with assistance from Mrs. Buzzell (regarding girls) and Mr. Grulke (regarding boys). If during the course of a school year a new clothing style or trend emerges that school administration determines is inappropriate or contrary to our mission and values, that style or trend will be prohibited.

Infractions
School administration reserves the right to determine if a student is dressed appropriately. The teacher will keep a record of infractions.

If a student is not dressed properly the following steps will be taken:

• 1st Occurrence - The student will be told to correct the inappropriate attire. If they do not have the proper attire with them, they will be told to wear proper attire the office has on hand. Parents will be notified of inappropriate attire via a behavior note.
• 2nd Occurrence -  The student will be told to correct the inappropriate attire. If they do not have the proper attire with them, they will be told to wear proper attire the office has on hand. A Behavior Slip will be issued for failure to honor the dress code. A parent or guardian must sign the Behavior Slip and return it to school the following school day.
• 3rd Occurrence -The student will be told to correct the inappropriate attire. If they do not have the proper attire with them, they will be told to wear proper attire the office has on hand. The student will be issued a detention slip, after school on the same day as the infraction. A parent or guardian must sign the detention slip and attend a mandatory meeting with the Principal at a time set by the Principal.
• 4th Occurrence - The student will be told to correct the inappropriate attire. If they do not have the proper attire with them, they will be told to wear proper attire the office has on hand. The student will serve a one-day suspension from school. Parents will be notified of inappropriate attire and the suspension via phone and/or email and/or text. A meeting will be scheduled with the parent, acting principal, and School Pastor regarding the repeated infractions.

In addition to the consequences noted above, it is possible that the student will be limited from participation in any extracurricular activities for the day of the infractions and detention.
